Birth of Opera

$18.00

In the year 1600, a grand wedding between King Henry IV of France to Maria de Medici was held in Florence, Italy. As part of the festivities, the world's first fully sung play was performed and with 4,000 guests in attendance, opera was born. As composers worked hard to best illustrate drama through music, they developed a colorful palette of musical techniques that came to be known as the Baroque style, with big, dramatic contrasts in tempo and dynamics, a spotlight on the individual expression of the human person, and an exuberant feast of musical ornamentation. Learn where, how and why opera started, which countries and composers contributed to its early development, and how this genre became a sumptuous feast for all the senses!

Composers Featured: Claudio Monteverdi, Jean-Baptiste Lully, Henry Purcell and Frideric Handel
